Back in the Saddle Again

Published by theadequate under babbling Edit This

… I know, it’s been a few weeks. My apologies folks - life got on top of me… but!

I have a number of things on the stove right now:

  • Masters of Illusion - Some Observations and Commentary
  • More Things You Will See At Faire
  • My “America’s Got Talent” Adventure (the last week of April)
  • And yes, more rambling about secrets, creating magic, and occasionally causing people to pass beverage through their nose

Just so y’all know - I will in fact be auditioning for America’s Got Talent the weekend of April 25 and 26 in Seattle. The time and location are To Be Announced, and as soon as they are, I’ll announce them here.

I’m also going to try and post more often and link to more new items as that seems to be something the Blogosphere ™ enjoys.

Onward!

More Random Epigrams

Published by theadequate under Faires, Random, babbling Edit This

  • No one cares about who you used to be at Faire. They’re concerned with you are are now.
  • Remember that weeks and sometimes entire months go by between weekends at Faire, and that during this time, something called “life” happens.
  • Damp haybales don’t dry out if you’re sitting on them.
  • Going to restaurants in costume begins  to pale after a decade
  • If you can’t figure you who they’re yelling at to “make way” - it’s you
  • When in doubt, if they’re well dressed they’re “my lord” or “my lady”, if they’re in peasant garb, they’re “good coz” if they’re customrs, go with “my lord” or “my lady” again.
  • When in doubt among the nobles, gibber and grovel. Works wonders.
  • It takes more skill to fail spectacularly than to succeed in a dull manner.
  • Never underestimate the power of a well-timed spit-take

“A professional is…”

Published by theadequate under Art, Theatre, babbling Edit This

A professional is a guy who can do it twice!

- Dizzy Gillespie, in an interview with Paul Halmill

I ran into this quote in a slim tome entitled Why Sinatra Matters (which is also a good read if you’re one of those young guys who doesn’t understand where there was so much hubbub about an the guy who sang “My Way”) and it stuck with me because it’s true.  Consistancy, or at least the ability to create quality results, is the key to being a professional performer.

… so how does this tie in with Magic? Well, Magic as a performing art is all about achieving the seeminly impossible through the manipulation of the environment in ways the audience isn’t aware of… most magicians I know of tend to focus on getting the mechanics right - your hand goes here, you turn this way, you look here, and bingo - magic.

The problem is that we focus on the mechanics to the point that the mechanics are all the audience sees. We also need to keep the magic itself fresh - I go back to my theatrical heritage for this - You have to present the magic as it it was the very first time this was happening to you, as well as to your audience. Otherwise you’re just moving your hands around.

… how does this tie in with Faire? That should be pretty obvious by now - we focus on the improvisational nature of the Renaissance Faire environment, but at the same time we need to be able to produce consistant results - the audience is entertained and they want to come back and see more. It’s very easy to go on “auto-pilot” with some gigs and bits of business, or to just fire-hose things  out at the crowd because if you’re standing still, your audience changes every 30 seconds. Experimentation is good, but remember that you want keep your batting average about .300 in this arena - Find the bits that work, polish them and use them wisely.

… because the professional is the guy who can do it twice.

Babbling - Holy Grails and Windmills

Published by theadequate under Magic, babbling Edit This

Like my friend Stevil said in a comment on the Trick Development post - sometimes a trick will sit on the shelf for years and then one day you’ll get a flash of inspriation and bingo - you have a new bit for the show.

ON THE OTHER HAND… sometimes there are tricks and effects which just lodge in your head and you wind up spending an inordinate amount of time and money to try and find the right way to do it for your show… until someone performs an intervention and stops you from obsessing so much.

For me, that obsession was, and to a certain extent continues to be Levitations.

Let’s be blunt here - I’m not a dainty magician. So the idea of being able to fly to, as David Copperfield puts it in his act “push against the air and fly” is a big deal. I spent four years looking for the right way to pull this off in a Renaissance Faire environment.

… I spent a lot of money looking for a way to pull that off in a Renaissance Faire environment.

So far, no dice. There are, of course, a few reasons for that. The first of which is if it looks like the thing is floating, something is holding it up!* That something has to be concealed from view. In an outdoor environment where sight lines can’t be policed… that just ain’t gonna happen.

There’s also set up time (because we don’t have a curtain to conceal the stage from the audience), portability, durability, weight considerations (see: not dainty)… and a lot of books, tricks and ebooks about self-levitation come and sit in my “stuff I don’t use” box for far too long.

Now the good news is that I’ve kind of got an idea about something in which something floats… just not me. I’m still playing around with it, but in the right circumstances and with the right preparaion… it might just be feasible. And on top of that, it doesn’t need any fancy apparatus beyond a silk scarf (got), a cane (got) and me.

Magicians tilt at windmills … but sometimes we find a giant.

* Remember waaay back when I mentioned that I talk about secrets here ? Well here we go.

Shill Moment - I’m LESS OBSCURE!

Published by theadequate under babbling Edit This

Thanks to the kind folks at Countyfairgrounds.USA, I am the January 2009 Entertainment Pick!

http://www.countyfairgrounds.net/entertainersforhire.php

Holy moley!  Thanks much to Karen at Countyfairgrounds, USA for the tip of the hat.  With any luck this will also mean more folks looking to see what kind of entertainment value they can get for their hard earned dollars out of a certain hack magician.

Thanks again to Karen - go to her site, stroll around the grounds until you feel at home!

January is a “quiet month” for your average peripatetic magician - lots of time to research, send emails, make phone calls, consult calendars, beg and plead… and write blog entries, of course.
